Q: What is a healthy body condition score for a dog?

A BCS of approximately 4–5 out of 9 is generally considered ideal. Scores above 5 indicate increasing excess body fat.

Q: How often should I weigh my dog while dieting?

About every two weeks is a useful interval during the early part of many weight-loss programs. Once a stable and appropriate rate is established, your veterinarian may recommend a different schedule.

Question 1

How much weight should a dog lose per week?

Accepted Answer

For adult dogs in a structured weight-loss program, approximately 1–2% of current body weight per week has traditionally been used as a desired range. Around 1% per week is a reasonable goal for many dogs, and slower progress can still be appropriate.

Question 2

How many calories should my dog eat to lose weight?

Accepted Answer

A common starting method is to calculate RER from your dog's ideal or target weight and use approximately 1.0 × RER for canine weight loss. The result should then be adjusted based on actual progress.

Question 3

How do I calculate my dog's ideal weight?

Accepted Answer

The best method is a veterinary assessment using body condition, muscle condition, frame, and previous healthy weight. If that is not available, a 9-point body condition score can provide a rough starting estimate.

Question 4

What is a healthy body condition score for a dog?

Accepted Answer

A BCS of approximately 4–5 out of 9 is generally considered ideal. Scores above 5 indicate increasing excess body fat.

Question 5

How long will it take my dog to lose weight?

Accepted Answer

It depends on how much weight needs to be lost and the dog's actual weekly rate. For example, a 50-pound dog losing around 1% per week would lose approximately 0.5 pound per week initially, although the rate may change as body weight decreases.

Question 6

Can I just feed less of my dog's regular food?

Accepted Answer

A modest adjustment may sometimes be appropriate, but substantial restriction of an ordinary maintenance diet can also reduce essential nutrient intake. Dogs requiring significant calorie restriction may benefit from a diet specifically formulated for weight management.

Question 7

Should I stop giving treats while my dog is losing weight?

Accepted Answer

Not necessarily. Treats can fit into a weight-loss plan when their calories are counted, but non-complete foods should generally remain around 10% or less of total daily calories.

Question 8

Why isn't my dog losing weight even though I am feeding less?

Accepted Answer

Check portion measurements, the food's actual calorie density, treats, chews, table scraps, food stealing, and whether everyone in the household is following the same plan. If intake appears accurate and weight still does not change, ask your veterinarian to reassess the calorie target and possible medical factors.

Question 9

How often should I weigh my dog while dieting?

Accepted Answer

About every two weeks is a useful interval during the early part of many weight-loss programs. Once a stable and appropriate rate is established, your veterinarian may recommend a different schedule.
