Question 1

Which Dog Breeds Are More Likely to Need Anal Gland Expression?

Accepted Answer

Some smaller breeds and spaniels, including Cavalier King Charles Spaniels and Cocker Spaniels, have higher documented rates of anal sac disorders. However, breed alone does not determine whether a dog needs manual expression.

Question 2

What Is the Difference Between External and Internal Anal Gland Expression?

Accepted Answer

External expression applies gentle pressure from outside the anus, while internal expression involves a gloved finger inside the rectum to assess and empty the sacs. External expression may not completely evacuate retained material, and internal expression requires appropriate professional training.

Question 3

What Are the Possible Side Effects of Anal Gland Expression?

Accepted Answer

Temporary discomfort or mild irritation may occur after expression. Excessive pressure, improper technique, or unnecessary repeated expression can injure sensitive tissues and aggravate existing inflammation.

Question 4

What Does Normal Anal Gland Discharge Look Like?

Accepted Answer

Normal anal sac secretions vary in color and consistency, ranging from thin liquid to thicker material, often with a strong fishy odor. Bloody or pus-like discharge, especially with swelling or pain, requires veterinary evaluation.

Question 5

Does Anal Gland Expression Hurt Dogs?

Accepted Answer

Proper expression of uncomplicated anal sacs may cause mild discomfort but should not produce severe pain. Significant pain during the procedure can indicate inflammation, infection, or another abnormality that needs veterinary assessment.

Question 6

Is Anal Gland Expression Necessary at Every Grooming Appointment?

Accepted Answer

No, routine expression during every grooming visit is unnecessary for most dogs. It should be performed only when appropriate for the individual dog, ideally following veterinary assessment or an established veterinary recommendation.
