Our Overall Score
Our Verdict
After feeding Nom Nom to our dogs for about a year, we can confidently say it’s a very good fresh dog food. We recommend it to dog parents looking for an upgrade from traditional kibble in ingredient quality, nutrition, moisture content, and taste. It’s especially appealing for picky eaters, dogs that enjoy homemade-style meals, and owners who prefer human-grade, fresh, recognizable ingredients over highly processed, unidentifiable blends. That said, while there’s plenty we love about Nom Nom, there are also a few areas we’d like to see improved.
Reasons to Buy or Avoid
What We Love
- USDA-grade proteins + vegetables
- Fresh diet benefits
- Gently cooked
- Developed by board-certified veterinary nutritionists
- Personalized portions
- Small-batch preparation
- Safety + quality checks
- Strong aroma + palatability
- Home-delivery convenience
Trade-Offs
- Higher cost for large or multi-dog homes
- Not shelf-stable
- Freezer space required
- Thawing takes planning
- Less convenient for travel
- Limited vitamin + mineral transparency
Our biggest positives are the USDA-grade proteins and recognizable vegetables, recipes developed by board-certified veterinary nutritionists, and personalized portions that make serving straightforward. We also appreciate the small-batch preparation aimed at preserving nutrients and the safety checks intended to support quality and consistency. The food’s aroma, its greater appeal to our dogs compared with their usual kibble or wet food, and the convenience of home delivery are other positives. The biggest trade-offs are the price—especially for larger dogs and households with multiple dogs—and the freezer space and planning needed for thawing.

Third-Party Research
May Improve Digestibility & Influence Gut Microbiota
In a controlled feeding study involving 12 dogs, the fresh and human-grade diets tested generally showed higher nutrient digestibility than the extruded kibble tested. The researchers also observed less fecal output and changes in the dogs’ gut microbiota.[1]
May Improve Metabolic Markers in Senior Dogs
A one-year study involving 22 senior dogs found that a fresh, human-grade diet altered several metabolic markers. Changes appeared within 30 days and continued over the year, including lower advanced glycation end products and shifts in antioxidant-related metabolites.[2]
Longevity Association
An older statistical analysis of 522 dogs reported average lifespans of 13.1 years for dogs fed homemade food versus 10.4 years for dogs fed commercial canned food. That represents a difference of approximately 32 months.[3]
Nom Nom Research Study
- Higher nutrient digestibility: All four fresh recipes showed over 90% apparent digestibility across five measured categories (dry matter, protein, fat, nitrogen-free extract, and calories), outperforming the kibble tested (adjusted P < 0.001 for all five measures).
- Less fecal output: In the 12-dog chicken-recipe comparison, average defecation frequency was 1.2 vs. 1.7 times/day (about 29% fewer), while fecal dry matter was 24 vs. 47 g/day (about 49% less) for fresh food versus kibble.
- Greater metabolizable energy: The fresh chicken recipe provided 5.07 vs. 4.14 kcal/g of dry matter (about 22% higher) than the kibble tested. Fresh beef (4.95) and turkey (4.88 kcal/g) were also higher; pork (4.07 kcal/g) was not.[4]

Nutrition & formulation
What it is: Evaluates the nutritional information available for the recipe, the supporting nutrient data, and its stated nutritional adequacy against applicable AAFCO standards.
Score components:- 9 Guaranteed analysis
- 9 Nutrient data
- 9 AAFCO standards
This category contributes 25% of the overall score. Provisional component breakdown: component scores currently match the category score.
1 Complete & Balanced: Nom Nom states that its fresh recipes meet the nutritional profiles established by the Association of American Feed Control Officials (AAFCO), the organization that develops nutritional standards and ingredient definitions for pet food in the U.S. These profiles cover all life stages, including the growth of large-breed puppies. That’s reassuring, but complete and balanced nutrition doesn’t mean every dog should receive the same portions. Individual needs still matter, which is why Nom Nom’s personalized feeding plans are a useful feature.
2. Guaranteed Analysis: We converted Nom Nom’s guaranteed analysis to a dry-matter basis to compare its protein and fat levels against AAFCO’s minimum requirements. Based on these calculations, all four recipes exceed AAFCO’s minimum protein and fat percentages. That’s an excellent start in our nutritional assessment. However, higher numbers don’t automatically mean better nutrition. We also need to consider vitamins, minerals, and other nutritional factors before reaching an overall verdict on nutritional quality.

3 Vitamins & Minerals: Nom Nom’s recipes include sources of essential vitamins and minerals (Nutrient Mix), but the brand doesn’t publish their complete quantities on its recipe labels. We did find reported phosphorus levels of 1.2%–1.3% on a dry-matter basis in a Chewy product Q&A, which fall within AAFCO’s growth and reproduction range of 1.0%–1.6%. While that’s encouraging, it doesn’t confirm that all other vitamins and minerals meet AAFCO requirements. We’d prefer Nom Nom to publish a complete nutritional analysis for each recipe rather than leaving customers to search elsewhere or assume every nutrient meets the required standards.

Nom Nom prepares and packages its meals in U.S. kitchens, with facilities listed in Nashville, Tennessee, and the San Francisco Bay Area. The company uses responsibly sourced ingredients, including USDA-grade proteins and whole vegetables, which are gently cooked separately and combined in small batches without artificial preservatives. Recipes are evaluated by veterinary nutritionists and a PhD science team, while ingredients undergo safety testing. Meals are then portioned to your dog’s calorie needs and shipped cold in insulated packaging with dry ice or gel packs. We like Nom Nom’s emphasis on gentle cooking, nutritional oversight, and personalized portions. However, greater transparency around ingredient sourcing and safety-testing procedures would help customers better assess its quality claims.

Nom Nom vs Kibble Price
A cost comparison of Nom Nom’s price per pound versus traditional and premium kibble reveals that Nom Nom is significantly more expensive. However, in our experience, the extra cost is justified by the convenience of home delivery, time saved on meal preparation, personalized portions, and potential health benefits of feeding your dog fresh food, especially when compared to the potential downsides of feed-grade, highly processed kibble.
Sources: Statista (kibble price benchmarks) and Chewy Fresh Variety Pack. Nom Nom calculation: $73.99 ÷ (7 × 14 oz ÷ 16) = $12.08/lb ($26.63/kg).

Nom Nom’s fresh recipes are formulated to meet AAFCO nutrient profiles for all life stages, including the growth of large-breed puppies. Its Scoopables are also listed as suitable for puppies, adults, and seniors. That’s reassuring, but all-life-stages suitability doesn’t mean every dog has the same nutritional needs. Portions still need to reflect your dog’s age, weight, activity level, and calorie requirements, which Nom Nom’s personalized subscription service helps address. It’s also worth noting that Nom Nom’s treats and probiotics have different age guidance and are intended to complement, not replace, complete meals.

We prepared meals for our five dogs—Bandit, Toffey, Shaggy, Khaleesi, and Bailey—using their recommended portions. What impressed us most was how recognizable the ingredients were. The food looked like a freshly prepared homemade meal, and the pre-portioned packaging made serving convenient with minimal preparation.
How to Serve Nom Nom
Here’s our step-by-step walkthrough.
-
Thaw the Meal 24–48 HOURS
Remove the required meal pack from the freezer and allow it to thaw in the refrigerator for 24–48 hours before serving.
In a hurry?Place the sealed pouch in a bowl of cold water, changing the water every 15–30 minutes. Thawing time varies with portion size.
Avoid microwaving or leaving meals to thaw at room temperature. -
Check Feeding Portions
Follow your dog’s personalized Nom Nom feeding plan or the package’s feeding guidelines to determine the appropriate amount. Portions vary with your dog’s weight, age, activity, and dietary needs.
-
Open the Package
Once thawed, peel open the sealed pouch carefully. Check that the meal is completely thawed before serving.
-
Squeeze & Serve
Squeeze the food directly into your dog’s clean bowl, serve the recommended portion, and you’re ready for mealtime. No additional cooking is required.

Nom Nom’s flat, pre-portioned packages make freezer organization relatively straightforward. Nom Nom’s frozen meals are less convenient for frequent travel than shelf-stable dog foods because they require continuous cold storage. This can make road trips, flights, camping, and stays without refrigeration more challenging. Our recommendation: For trips with suitable cold storage, transport sealed meals in an insulated cooler with ice packs, keeping them at or below 40°F (4°C), and transfer them to a refrigerator or freezer at your destination. Otherwise, a shelf-stable option may be more practical.
How to Store Nom Nom
Here’s how we store and manage the meals.
-
Freeze Upon Delivery
Once your delivery arrives, place the meal packs directly into your freezer. Nom Nom ships the food cold or frozen, so it should be stored promptly rather than left at room temperature.
-
Organize & Stack
The flat pouches are easy to stack neatly in freezer drawers or arrange by recipe and feeding date. This makes it easier to find the next meal and rotate older packages first.
-
Move to the Refrigerator
Transfer the next meal packs from freezer to refrigerator 24–48 hours before feeding. Once thawed, keep the food refrigerated in its sealed pouch or a covered container and use it within five days.

Average Global Score
To give you a broader picture of Nom Nom’s reputation and quality, we compared ratings from five customer and editorial review sources, including Amazon, Chewy, Trustpilot, and Canine Bible. Nom Nom earned an average score of 4.46 out of 5, with Amazon rating it 4.43/5 and Chewy 4.13/5. Overall, the results suggest a positive reception across customer and editorial reviews. That’s an encouraging result, but it’s important to remember that these sources evaluate different aspects of Nom Nom, from product quality to customer experience. Each source carries equal weight, regardless of review volume, so the average provides a useful overview rather than a definitive measure of quality or customer satisfaction.
