Q: What are the first signs of Dilated Cardiomyopathy (DCM) in dogs?

Early DCM may cause few or no obvious symptoms . As heart function declines, dogs may develop reduced stamina, exercise intolerance, coughing, rapid or labored breathing, weakness, decreased appetite, fainting, or sudden collapse. High-risk breeds may benefit from cardiac screening before symptoms appear.

Q: How is Dilated Cardiomyopathy (DCM) diagnosed in dogs?

Veterinarians typically begin with a physical examination and cardiac evaluation , followed by tests such as an echocardiogram, ECG, chest X-rays, bloodwork, and cardiac biomarkers . A Holter monitor may also be used to detect intermittent arrhythmias, especially in predisposed breeds.

Q: Can Dilated Cardiomyopathy (DCM) in dogs be treated or cured?

DCM usually cannot be cured , particularly when it is inherited. However, treatment with medications such as pimobendan, diuretics, ACE inhibitors, spironolactone, or antiarrhythmic drugs may improve heart function, control symptoms, and help maintain quality of life.

Q: What causes Dilated Cardiomyopathy (DCM) in dogs?

DCM may develop from a combination of genetic, nutritional, metabolic, and cardiac factors . Certain breeds have a strong inherited predisposition, while some cases may be associated with taurine or L-carnitine deficiencies, persistent abnormal heart rhythms, or cardiotoxic medications. In other dogs, the exact cause remains unknown.

Q: How can I support my dog with Dilated Cardiomyopathy (DCM)?

Provide a calm routine, veterinarian-approved activity, consistent medications, balanced nutrition, and regular cardiac monitoring . Track your dog’s resting breathing rate, stamina, appetite, coughing, weakness, and fainting episodes. Regular veterinary or cardiology checkups can help detect changes early and adjust treatment as needed.
