Sport Dog Food K-9 Series Review

The Sport Dog Food K9 Series is divided into two dry dog food formulas, as shown in the picture below.

We’ve chosen the Police K-9 dog formula to represent the other products in the line for this review.

Sport Dog Food Police K-9 Review

Who is this recipe good for?

Their Police K-9 formula is made specifically for Law enforcement and military dogs who serve as close companions to their owners. These dogs are some of the hardest working dogs and must stay in peak condition. This dog food recipe makes it easy to provide a complete diet that meets the nutritional needs of police dogs and military canines. How?

Sport Dog Food knows K9 units’ coats experience some of the most damaging environments due to their work. That is why they’ve added cold-pressed Wild Norwegian Salmon oil will make your dogs’ coats glossy and sleek. This oil’s anti-inflammatory properties nourish muscles and aid recovery, especially following extraneous exercise.

This formula also contains Super Sport TR-33, which will significantly enhance performance and help your K-9 companion meet its peak genetic potential. At 526 calories/cup, this formula will keep your K9 dog alert and ready for action—a balanced diet of 26% protein, 19% Fat, and 36% Carbs.

Sport Dog Food Cub Review (For Puppies)

Adult active dogs are not the only ones who can reap the benefits of SDF formulas. Puppies can too. Sport Dog Food Cub is perfect for active puppies and sporting puppy breeds. Especially if your cub is growing up to be a canine athlete champion, he deserves the best start in life that you can give him.

This formula contains a powerful balance of 30% premium animal protein and 20% fat and no grains, poultry, canola oil, or flax. It helps develop and maintain strong bones and muscles with omega fatty acids for healthy skin and coat. Puppies shouldn’t be eating food with fillers. The cub recipe provides oatmeal, a great source of carbohydrate, fiber, and linoleic acid, supporting skin and coat health and contributing to a healthy digestive system.

They use Water Buffalo as the primary source of protein. Compared with commercial beef & lamb, water buffalo is a healthier alternative because it is leaner and has higher protein content. Puppies are always playing and moving around, so they require a lot of energy. At 526 calories/cup, this formula will keep your puppy full of energy for playtime and other activities during the day.

Active Dog Nutrition Tips & Expert Advice

According to Joseph Wakshlag, professor of clinical nutrition and sports medicine at Cornell University College of Veterinary Medicine in Ithaca, the ideal nutrition for sporting and active dogs should be high in fat and protein.

Here is what he had to say when asked about sports dogs’ nutrition:

  • Protein is vital. Athletic dogs need protein to build and maintain muscle. Their diet should consist of at least 25% protein, preferably from meat.
  • For dogs jogging with you for 20 minutes a few times a week, a normal commercial dog food containing about 15 or 16 percent fat should be fine. If your dog runs 5 or 10 miles a day, he likely needs a higher-fat diet such as 20%
  • He recommends looking at your dog’s diet in terms of performance if your dog is running continuously for more than 30 minutes.
  • Ensure water is available, especially when running with your pup for more than 30 minutes. Don’t share your Gatorade, he said. Dogs don’t need electrolytes.

Another factor to consider when feeding a sporting dog is whether your dog is on-season or off-season. Here are some fundamental guidelines:

  • High-quality food that guarantees a high energy intake and control over the daily amount of meals
  • A nutrient-dense diet that allows enough energy in a small quantity of food
  • Feed your dog with products that are easily digestible to provide the required energy efficiently
  • Use high-quality animal proteins to provide essential amino acids that maintain and develop muscles and repair tissues.
  • A high-fat, high-energy food
  • A fiber source that promotes intestinal health

We checked Sport Dog Food’s list of ingredients for various formulas. They meet this criterion and go beyond the minimum to ensure their formulas are well optimized for each different type of sporting dog and agility dog out there.

What Food Should I Feed My Sport Dog?

Before changing your dog’s diet, consult with your veterinarian.

An athlete’s dog’s diet plan will vary depending on the type of physical activity they perform. A diet for a sledding dog is not the same as the diet agility contest dogs should follow.

That is why Sport Dog Food offers various recipes to tackle the necessities of each type of active dog.

Should You Buy Sport Dog Food?

Feeding an active dog is not complicated but requires finding the right dog formula.

There is no perfect diet for athletic dogs, but Sport Dog Food does an excellent, if not the best, job providing high-performance, bioavailable dog food that translates into good nutrition for canine athletes and dogs alike. It’s not advisable to buy cheap dog foods packed with cheap fillers that bring nothing good nutritionally, especially when dealing with highly active dogs.

When assessing which food is the most appropriate for your dog, it is essential to seek a professional’s advice to determine what type of diet best fits your dog’s individual needs.
