Q: How Is Aortic Stenosis Diagnosed In Dogs?

Veterinarians typically begin with a physical examination and heart auscultation to detect a murmur. The most important diagnostic test is echocardiography with Doppler , which allows the veterinarian to see the narrowed area, evaluate heart structure, measure blood-flow velocity, and estimate the pressure gradient to determine disease severity.

Q: Can Aortic Stenosis In Dogs Be Treated Or Cured?

Aortic stenosis is a structural heart defect and usually cannot be completely cured . Mild cases may only require monitoring, while moderate or severe disease may be managed with exercise restrictions, beta-blockers, antiarrhythmic medications, and regular cardiac evaluations . Selected dogs may be candidates for catheter-based or surgical procedures.

Q: What Causes Aortic Stenosis In Dogs?

Aortic stenosis is usually congenital and strongly influenced by genetics . The most common form, subaortic stenosis, develops when abnormal fibrous tissue forms below the aortic valve and restricts blood flow. Certain breeds, including Newfoundlands, Boxers, Golden Retrievers, Rottweilers, and Bullmastiffs , have a higher inherited risk.

Q: Can Dogs With Aortic Stenosis Exercise Normally?

Exercise recommendations depend on the severity of the condition . Dogs with mild disease may tolerate normal activity, while dogs with moderate or severe stenosis may need to avoid intense running, strenuous exercise, overheating, and highly demanding activity because these can increase the risk of fainting or dangerous arrhythmias. Your veterinarian or veterinary cardiologist can recommend a safe activity level.

Question 1

What Are The First Signs Of Aortic Stenosis In Dogs?

Accepted Answer

Early signs of aortic stenosis can be subtle or absent, especially in mild cases. A heart murmur is often the first clue found during a routine veterinary exam. As the condition becomes more severe, dogs may develop exercise intolerance, weakness, fatigue, fainting, or collapse, particularly during strenuous activity.
